Writing to the Department

The Department answers questions about registration, assistance, examinations, identity cards and the records it keeps. Write to the office below, telephone the division that deals with your matter, or call in person during office hours.

Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs
No. 180, T. B. Jayah Mawatha
Colombo 10, Sri Lanka

info@hindudept.gov.lk
8.30am – 4.15pm, Monday to Friday
Closed on public and mercantile holidays

The Department also keeps offices in Jaffna, Kataragama, Batticaloa and Ampara. Their addresses and the officer responsible for each are being confirmed and will be published here.

When you write

Every letter is given a reference number, and that number is how the Department finds your file.

An officer in the division concerned reads it and replies. Quote the reference in anything you send afterwards about the same matter.

If it cannot wait

Telephone the division directly.

The numbers below reach each division and its extension. For anything concerning a temple ask for the Assistant Director (Temple); for an Aranery school, the Assistant Director (Hindu Education).

Write to the Department

Ask a question, tell the Department a record is wrong, report a complaint, or — if you run an Aranery school — request materials. What you send goes straight to the Department’s register and is read by an officer in the division concerned. Nothing is stored on this website.

Who is asking

The Department needs a way to reply. Give at least a telephone number or an email address.

What to include

If your matter concerns a temple, an Aranery school or an institution, give its registration number. It is the fastest way for an officer to find the right file, and without it a reply takes longer.

You are given a reference number

Keep it. It is how the Department finds your submission if you write again about the same matter.

Complaints are sent anonymously

No name or contact detail is collected or stored for a complaint, so nobody can later be told who complained — and the Department cannot write back about it. If you want a reply, send a question rather than a complaint.
