Department of Hindu Religious & Cultural Affairs

Directories

The Department keeps the register of Hindu religious institutions in Sri Lanka. Search it by name in Tamil, Sinhala or English, or narrow it to a district. Records are being transferred from the Department’s own system, so the register grows as that work goes on.

22 temples found

What a record holds

Every temple in the register carries its name in Tamil, Sinhala and English, its registration number, and the district and province it stands in. Most also carry the principal deity, the year it was established, its address and divisional secretariat, and a contact for the temple.

Attached to the record are the priests assigned to the temple, the Aranery schools that belong to it, and the festivals held there — which is how those registers are reached. Where a temple has supplied them, photographs and e-books appear on its record too.

A registration number is the Department’s own reference for a record. Quote it in any correspondence about that temple and an officer can find the file at once.

Keeping the register right

A record that is wrong is worth telling the Department about.

If a temple’s details have changed, or an entry here does not match what you know, send a correction. Give the registration number if you have it. An officer in the division concerned checks it against the file.
